On January 21, 2000, then-prime minister Salim al-Hoss instituted The Committee to Investigate the Fate of the Missing and Kidnapped. Initially, the initiative seemed to circumvent the years of denial that cloaked this tragic aspect of Lebanon’s civil war. In reality, however, it proved to be little more than a renewed attempt to close the file on the matter. This is a conversation with the head of that committee, who was responsible for having reported the number of the war’s missing and kidnapped as less than 3,000—and then declaring them dead.
