Topics of archiving and its application to transitional justice were covered in "Lest the Past Escape Us... Archiving and Documentation." For their sixth workshop, UMAM D&R and the International Center for Transitional Justice invited Hassan Mneimneh, the executive director of the Iraqi Memory Foundation, and Piers Pigou, the director of the South African History Archive to draw upon their extensive and wide-ranging experience approaching war and conflict from an archival standpoint.
In his presentation about Iraq, Mneimneh discussed mass graves and how they can actually be considered a document to be used in war crimes tribunals. Turning to South Africa, Pigou delved into the processes of acquiring documents from a legalistic point of view and in turn the need to make documents accessible to various parts of society. For Lebanon's own archival collection, attendees provided varying perspectives and focused on different aspects of documenting the war, such as the seizure of materials by rival groups, or the simple act of material being destroyed by new conflicts.
